ASNA Wings®

The fast, easy way to replace your green screens with an enhanced user interface

Download Wings Fact Sheet (PDF)

ASNA Wings is a revolutionary new product for IBM i RPG programs that modernizes traditional 5250 green screen user interfaces. With Wings, you can quickly and effectively give your legacy RPG applications the user experience they deserve—while leaving your RPG logic intact on the IBM i. Wings is not a stop-gap screen scraper! Wings uses IBM’s Rational Open Access for RPG to naturally extend your RPG applications with open standards and superb extensibility.

Business benefits of using ASNA Wings

Wings ResultsRapid results. ASNA Wings does not require a lot of analysis and business logic migration. Only the presentation layer is changed so all back-end logic or database access remains intact. With Wings you select the highest payoff screens to modernize first. Any screen you do not initially modernize will be presented with Wings’ built-in 5250 terminal emulator.

Built on IBM’s Open Access for RPG. Wings uses IBM’s Open Access so that all of your RPG logic and file IO remain hosted on the IBM i platform. To enable Wings in your RPG programs you only need to add a single continuation line to the workstation file declaration. Otherwise, the RPG program is oblivious to the fact that the traditional display file isn’t being used.

Industry standard user interface construction. Wings creates standard ASP.NET ASPX pages for its user interface. You can use Microsoft’s Visual Studio with ASNA Visual RPG for .NET, VB.NET, or C# to further extend and enhance the user experience. There are no proprietary UI widgets, tools, or scripting languages to learn like there are with screen scrapers or other competing products. Wings is based on industry standards.

Further application migration opportunities. Wings is a member of the ASNA Monarch® migration suite. You can use Wings very quickly and easily to modernize RPG user experience. However, at a later stage, you have the option of fully migrating those applications off of the IBM i. With Wings, you can later call on Monarch to do a full-featured RPG migration of your application to .NET (which reuses the same screens you have transformed with Wings). Once migrated with Monarch, your apps can connect to either the IBM i or MS SQL Server (with minimal RPG changes) and you can further extend and enhance these apps using the world-class Microsoft Visual Studio environment.

Build other new apps around your Wings UI. Because the Wings UI is simply ASP.NET Web pages, you can easily use VB.NET, C# or ASNA Visual RPG for .NET to build new apps around the application foundation that your newly-modernized Wings applications provide.

Wings offers unparalleled possibilities to extract additional life and value out of your IBM i RPG application portfolio.
