A year ago, on January 14th, 2020, Windows 7 formally came to end-of-life. Effective that date Microsoft quit providing critical security updates for Windows 7. With Windows 7 behind us, it almost seems impossible that we need to start worrying about Windows 8 end-of-life, but we do! Let's have a quick quiz: how long ago was Windows 8.0 released? Answer: 12 years ago!
Windows 8.0 no longer gets critical updates but most users have upgraded to Windows 8.1. Windows 8.1 reached the end of mainstream support on January 9th, 2018. This means it is no longer getting feature enhancements--however, critical security updates remain available for Windows 8.1 until January 10th, 2023.
Make plans now!
January 2023, sounds like eons from now, but check your calendar. It's 2021! In just two years, Windows 8.1 is in Microsoft's software graveyard. Time goes really fast and you want to plan an orderly and successful Windows upgrade. If your organization is using Windows 8.1, start now planning your upgrades!
Also, just for the comfort of it, do a quick audit and make sure you don't have any Windows-update non-believers that are still using Windows 8.0. That's an invitation for malware, ransomware, viruses, and lots of weekends in the office when you should be out playing!
